Lagotto Romagnolo Coat Colors & Changes Over Time
The Lagotto Romagnolo comes in a beautiful variety of colors, ranging from white, orange, and brown, either solid or mixed. However, black is not an accepted color in the breed standard. Any black markings or a black nose indicate an outcross with another breed.
Coat Color Changes Over Time
A Lagotto’s coat color evolves significantly, especially in the first 1–2 years of life. Here’s what to expect:
• Brown Roan Puppies – Born white and brown, they darken within a few weeks, developing their characteristic roan pattern.
• White Puppies – Some remain white, while others take on a light apricot hue as they mature.
• Brown Puppies – Born dark chocolate to nearly black, they gradually lighten with age, usually settling into a shade of light to medium brown. Only a few retain a deep, dark brown coat into adulthood.
This natural color transformation is part of what makes the Lagotto Romagnolo so unique!
