Lagotto Romagnolo & Flea/Tick Sensitivity

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a primitive working breed with a strong natural drive and a unique genetic background, making them more sensitive to certain medications. —including some flea and tick treatments. Over the years, we have observed neurological reactions in some of our Lagottos after using oral flea preventatives such as Bravecto and Trifexis. These reactions have ranged from mild tremors to more concerning neurological symptoms.  Because of this, we have opted to use Seresto collars as our preferred flea and tick prevention.

Soresto Collars

  • Cost approximately $55 and last for 8 months

  • Provide effective protection against fleas and ticks

  • Can be immediately removed if any adverse reaction occurs

  • Unlike oral medications, which stay in the system for extended periods,

  • A Seresto collar offers a safer alternative, as it can be removed at the first sign of sensitivity.

Wondercide

For those who prefer a natural approach, we have also used, a plant-based flea and tick spray that is safe for dogs.

  • Made with essential oils like cedarwood and lemongrass

  • Non-toxic and safe for pets, people, and the environment

  • Can be used in combination with Seresto for extra protection

  • Cost about $26

One important note: Wondercide must be applied daily to remain effective. It works well for repelling fleas and ticks but does not have the long-lasting protection of a Seresto collar.

We always recommend discussing flea and tick prevention options with your veterinarian and monitoring your Lagotto for any signs of sensitivity. For more information on Seresto collars or Wondercide, feel free to reach out to us!

What Dog Owners Need to Know

The Pacific Northwest (PNW) has a mild, damp climate, which creates the perfect environment for fleas and ticks to thrive year-round. While the region doesn’t have the same tick populations as the East Coast or the South, there are still several species of concern that can affect dogs, including the Western black-legged tick, American dog tick, and brown dog tick. Fleas are also a persistent issue, especially in coastal and forested areas.

Fleas in the PNW

Why Fleas Are a Problem in the PNW

• Mild, humid climate allows flea populations to remain active year-round.

• Urban and rural areas are both affected, as fleas thrive in grassy areas, wooded spaces, and even indoor environments.

• Wildlife (such as raccoons, deer, and rodents) can introduce fleas to yards and homes.

Flea Risks for Dogs

• Severe itching and skin irritation (flea allergy dermatitis)

• Anemia in young or small dogs due to blood loss from flea bites

• Tapeworm infections, as fleas can carry tapeworm larvae

• Household infestations, as fleas reproduce quickly in carpets, bedding, and furniture

Preventing & Controlling Fleas

• Use flea prevention year-round (Seresto collars, topical treatments, or natural repellents like Wondercide).

• Regularly wash bedding and vacuum carpets to remove flea eggs and larvae.

• Check dogs frequently, especially after being outdoors or around other animals.

Ticks in the PNW

Common Tick Species in the PNW

1. Western Black-Legged Tick (Ixodes pacificus)

• Found in forests, grasslands, and along the coast

• Can transmit Lyme disease and Anaplasmosis

2. American Dog Tick (Dermacentor variabilis)

• Prefers open fields and trails

• Can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Tularemia

3. Brown Dog Tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus)

• Thrives in kennels and indoor environments

• Can transmit Ehrlichiosis

Where Ticks Are Found in the PNW

• Dense forests, tall grasses, and coastal regions

• Hiking trails, state parks, and campgrounds

• Areas with high deer and rodent populations

Tick-Borne Diseases in the PNW

• Lyme Disease: Carried by Western black-legged ticks, primarily found in Oregon and Washington.

• Anaplasmosis: Another bacterial infection spread by black-legged ticks.

• Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever: Less common but still a risk from American dog ticks.

Preventing & Controlling Ticks

• Check dogs after outdoor activities, especially around the ears, neck, and paws.

• Use effective tick prevention (Seresto collars, natural sprays, or topical treatments).

• Keep grass and brush trimmed in yards to reduce tick habitat.

• Remove ticks quickly with tweezers, gripping close to the skin and pulling straight out.

Best Flea & Tick Prevention for PNW Dogs

Since flea and tick activity is year-round in the PNW, consistent prevention is essential. Based on our experience with Lagotto Romagnolos, we recommend:

1. Seresto Collars – Effective for 8 months, can be removed immediately if adverse reactions occur.

2. Wondercide Natural Spray – A plant-based option that must be applied daily but works well as a repellent.

3. Frequent Grooming & Checks – Regular baths and thorough inspections help catch fleas and ticks early.

Fleas and ticks are a constant concern in the Pacific Northwest due to the climate and local wildlife. Using a year-round prevention plan, performing regular checks, and choosing safe, effective treatments can help keep your dog comfortable and protected.
